What if the plants in our own backyards could make a difference far beyond our garden fences? That was one of the takeaways from our recent program featuring Jenny Wren of the Georgia Native Plant Society.
Jenny shared the important role native plants play in supporting local ecosystems, particularly the insects, birds, and pollinators that depend on them. Native trees, shrubs, and flowers do more than add beauty to our landscapes. They provide essential food, shelter, and habitat that help sustain the entire food web.
“Raising a single clutch of baby birds can require thousands of caterpillars and other insects”
The presentation was a wonderful reminder that gardening is about more than creating beautiful outdoor spaces. The plants we choose can have a lasting impact on our environment. By incorporating more native plants into our landscapes, we can help support biodiversity, provide habitat for pollinators, and create healthier ecosystems right here in our own community.
Sometimes, the most meaningful contribution we can make to nature starts right in our own backyard!
